2011 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships (16/03/11)

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to inform you that the 2011 Championships will be held in England at the Bournemouth University 16th – 18th December. More details will be provided in due course, but there will be an appropriate Entry Fee as well as a Drug Test fee. All weight and age groups will be included, for equipped and unequipped categories as well as bench press. We anticipate the number of lifters will be high and plan to run a two platform system.

The Bournemouth University Sport and Recreation Centre is central in the main campus and has extensive facilities including a 40m by 20m main hall (main facility for Championships) and many adjacent smaller halls and rooms, including treatment rooms and gymnasiums. This is a first class facility, which has been used for British Powerlifting Championships. Parking is considerable and free (500 spaces on campus) next or very close to venue centre.

Bournemouth itself is a well known English holiday resort situated on the South Coast only 1 hour 40 minutes by direct rail from London. Coach travel every hour is also available from the capital. Extensive hotel and guest house accommodation is available within 3 miles of the venue. Bournemouth International Airport is 5 miles from the University. Other airports and ferry ports are located within easy reach. Direct coach travel from Heathrow and Gatwick, run regularly on a two hourly basis. Coaches run to and from Bournemouth and Southampton Airports, run regularly direct to the centre of the town and hotels. The resort itself has over eight miles of beaches, two local harbours and is situated between the New Forest and the Purbeck cliffs and coast line. The sailing venue for the 2012 Olympics - Weymouth - is only 30 miles along the coast.

Entertainment facilities and night life in the town are extensive and popular.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if have any questions.

President's Address at the 2009 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships (05/03/10)

I was pleased to welcome those lifters, officials and supporters to our 3rd CPF Championships in Pune, India. As expected our member country numbers were down, perhaps due to the time of year, distance, cost and security. However, high numbers of lifters compensated. Security and hospitality was excellent and for that I thank Subrata Dutta and the India Powerlifting Federation.

Over the last 2 years, efforts have been made to expand our CPF membership. This is an ongoing process. We have had interest from several African countries but still not a firm commitment. However, we should have more success in 2011 in South Africa.

The 4th CPF Championships will be held in South Africa and with the help of the South Africa officials and Alan Ferguson (IPF Africa), we hope to see more African countries appearing at these championships.

Richard Parker and I had a good meeting with the Commonwealth Games Federation in London in 2009. Membership to the CGF is a long process but we will persevere. Our next application will be submitted in October 2010.

The CPF has held its first Bench Press competition at Pune, India alongside the 3-lift competition. Both competitions were well run and successful.

Fortunately all our CPF competitions have been well run and enjoyable for most of our participants.

I am pleased to say we have taken steps to consolidate our CPF image by designing Blazer badges and Ties. Prototypes are currently being made in India. I am hopeful we will be able to offer these products to our members in the near future. It is important we establish and consolidate our CPF identity.

It was agreed at the CPF meeting "unequipped lifting" is now part of the CPF agenda for records beginning in 2010. Most lifters use unequipped training for their powerlifting development, therefore it is a natural progression to include this type of lifting into the CPF agenda.

We understand "unequipped lifting" is happening in some of our CPF countries already and evidence tells us it has been successful in the UK for the last 5 years. I believe it will make our sport more inclusive and hopefully increase our numbers.

Equipment permitted for CPF unequipped and record submission is IPF compliant. The guidelines are as follows:-

(a) W/L and Wrestling Leotard(s) subject to the following:-

Non-supportive leotards must be one-piece and a full length lifting suit of one-ply stretch material without any patches, padding or division into panels by means of seams not necessary in the manufacture of the costume, or material giving reinforcement/bracing and any seams, false or otherwise that in the opinion of the Technical committee, Jury or referees (if jury or technical committee absent) shall invalidate the costume being used in the competition.

For obvious reasons - the costume must be form fitting without looseness when worn by the lifter. The length of leg must be a minimum of 3cm and a maximum of 25cm. Measured from the top of the crotch down the inside of the leg.

(b) No wraps, bandages, joint sleeves, wrist bandages.

(c) Briefs-IPF technical rules apply.

(d) Socks-IPF technical rules apply

(e) Belt-IPF technical rules apply(f) Shoes or Boots-IPF technical rules apply

(g) Medical tape-IPF technical rules apply.

(i) T shirts for males to be worn for squat and bench but optional for deadlift.

(j) Women must wear T shirts when competing for all lifts.

(k) T shirts to be made of cotton with sleeves terminating above the elbow. No longer than mid-thigh and worn inside the leotard.

(l) Logo’s and inscriptions on suits and shirts may bear the lifters nation-area-club or sponsor. But words or insignia which are offensive or likely to bring the sport into disrepute are not allowed.

Unequipped lifting is a pure form of powerlifting and should suit those lifters who prefer to specialise or do both. I am optimistic about the success of ""equipped", "unequipped" and "single lift" lifting within the CPF.

Finishing on a philosophical note - I often remind myself that Powerlifting is, in the main, a voluntary activity, initially devised by lifters for lifters and managed by officials, administrators and helpers who use their talents within a structured system of rules and protocols. It is a sensitive balance which must be carefully managed. It is a mission the CPF will continue to recognise ... lifters and officials with equal respect.

I look forward to seeing everyone in South Africa in 2011 and would like to thank you all for supporting the Commonwealth Powerlifting Federation.

2009 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships (26/12/09)

Dear Colleagues,

Whilst it was disappointing that so few countries sent teams, the Championships were very successful thanks to the superb organisation and hospitality of the Indian Powerlifting Federation led by Subrata Dutta. The second largest contingent was from South Africa and as usual they were very professional and extremely smartly turned out. This augers very well for our next Championships in 2011 to be held in Johannesburg. I hope that this will receive considerably support and I will be asking countries to confirm well in advance that they will be sending teams and officials. The support of everyone is essential to ensure the future of the CPF.

I would like to remind countries that in order to claim Commonwealth Records they must be up to date with their affiliation fees. At the moment the only countries who will be able to claim records from 1st January 2010 are England, India and South Africa.

Please find attached [PDF format]:

Lastly, may I wish you all the complements of the season and a very happy 2010.

Yours in Sport,

Richard Parker
